Christmas plays

We saw some excellent Christmas plays in the hall today.
Well done to Ms. Bohan's Senior Infants and Ms. Coade's Junior Infants for such wonderful singing, dancing, costumes and fun.
You have really put us in a Christmassy mood!
Ms. Flaherty's senior infant class did an absolutely fabulous play called Christmas With the Aliens. We really really enjoyed it. Congratulations to the whole class and to your teacher.

Advent wreaths

It is nearly Advent.
During Advent we will be preparing for Christmas.
We will hear the Christmas story, sing Christmas songs and light the candles on the Advent wreath.
Today we had fun painting, cutting and sticking our own Advent wreaths.
Thanks Mikel for all your help with our artistic work today.

Visit to the church

We visited the church last week, as we are learning all about the church at the moment. We saw the altar, the tabernacle, the baptismal font, beautiful stained glass windows and a lovely statue of Our lady. We learned thet the seats in a church are called pews. We know that the tabernacle is very special, as Jesus is present there, so we genuflected as we passed by it and said a special hello to Jesus. We also prayed for all our friends and families while we were there. We saw a lovely picture of Pope Benedict and we remembered him at this special time, as the church is preparing to pick a new pope.

Ash Wednesday

We visited the church today on the first day of Lent.
We got ashes on our foreheads.
Most of us are either giving up something we like for Lent, or else we are going to do something nice for someone else.  We hope we can last for 40 days.  That is a long time, but Easter is at the end of Lent, and we look forward to that.

Our Little Beings

We have been busy in First Class since we came back to school in January. On the 15th of January, we went to Leisureland to a concert given by the R.T.É. Concert Orchestra. The conductor's name was Gearóid Grant and he was very funny! We saw and heard all the instruments of the orchestra. It was great!

Sr. Breda came to visit us last week. She asked us questions about the Christmas story, and we sang songs for her. We were so good that she said we could have a night off homework! We were listening to stories about little beings, so for Art last week, each of us made our own little being! You can see the photos here.

St. Brigid's Day

Friday was Saint Brigid's Day. We were learning about Saint Brigid all week. We listened to stories about her and we made Saint Brigid's Day crosses

St. Brigid's cross

Look at the St. Brigid's cross made by a granny of one of the girls in our class.
Real crosses are made with rushes, and have many layers.
We really like this one.
Thanks Granny!
If you would like to learn to make one by yourself, follow the instructions on this page:
