Another wonderful nativity play in Junior infants

Well done to Ms. Conneely's class for such a fantastic play today.  The songs were so catchy that we just had to sing along.  We were all really impressed by such wonderful actors and actresses in this class.

Advent: A time of preparation

We are learning about Advent at present and we made these Advent Wreaths yesterday.

  • We are busy preparing for Christmas in Room 3. As well as getting ready for Santa's visit and counting down the days to Christmas on our Christmas calendar we are also preparing in a very special way for the birth of Jesus. This morning we all worked together and put up our crib on the altar in our classroom. It looks great! We also put up our Advent Wreath and Advent Calendar. We will be praying for a special intention for each day of Avent and we will try to be extra good, kind and helpful to everyone we meet as a special birthday present to Jesus.
  • Advent Wreath
The candles are lit to symbolise the light of God coming into the world through the birth of Christ. On the first, second and fourth Sundays of Advent a purple candle is lit (each sunday the candle from the previous sunday is re-lit). The colour purple as used during the period of lent, reminds us to prepare a welcome for Jesus during the Advent season. On the third Sunday of Advent a pink candle is lit. Pink is the colour of joy to remind us that we should be ready to welcome Jesus at Christmas. On christmas Eve the white candle is lit to celebrate the birth of Christ - The light of the World.

Visit to the church

Teacher took us to visit our local church today.  We have been talking about all the things in a church: the holy water font, the baptismal font, the organ, the paschal candle, the sanctuary lamp, the lectern, the altar, the tabernacle, the bell and the statue of Our Lady and the pictures of St. Oliver Plunkett.  We saw most of these things, but our visit was cut short because 6th class were having a practice for their confirmation.
We liked looking at the picture of St. Oliver Plunkett because our church in Renmore is named after him.

St. Brigid in Senior infants

The Feast Day of Saint Brigid was on the first of February. It was also the first day of Spring. We made Saint Brigid's crosses using coloured paper and they turned out great. We also heard the story about St. Brigid and her cloak and how she managed to gain the land to build a church. We learned a lovely song called 'Saint Brigid brings the Spring'.

St. Francis visits Senior Infant homes

We have been learning a lot about Saint Francis over the past few weeks and  we saw a lovely cartoon with five different stories about his life. We all loved the story about Saint Francis and the Wolf. It was great that St. Francis could make peace between the wolf and the people of Gubbio. In fact the wolf and the people of Gubbio became such good friends that when the wolf died some years later all the people in the town were really sad and missed him so much!! We have a toy St. Francis in class and we each get a chance to take him home with us and then the next day we tell the rest of the class about all the activities we did with St. Francis. So far St. Francis has been to the cinema, a soccer match, Supermacs, watched Dvd's, eaten speghetti and helped with homework to name just a few things, and he has many more adventures in store over the coming weeks!!! In religion this week we are learning about what the word peace means and we heard the story about how Jack and Jill had a row and how their Daddy helped them to make peace with one another and become friends again. We learned that it is important to say sorry if we hurt somebody or their feelings. We also decided that it is important to forgive. We practised saying sorry and shaking hands with one another just as Jack and Jill had done. Then we learned how to do bubble writing and we wrote the word peace in bubble writing and decorated it.

Learning to say the Rosary: Senior Infants

Teacher brought us some Rosary beads from Italy and we are learning how to say a decade of the Rosary. Our beads are red and they smell like beautiful flowers!! We all take turns giving out the Rosary and we are getting very good at it. We remember to include everyone in our prayers each day, especially children less fortunate than ourselves and all the sick and homeless people. We also remember all our friends and our families.
